I had another thought about the movie this morning. Thankfully brief, this thought follows the spoiler cut below.

Another way -- possibly the best and most charitable way -- to look at this movie is to see it as a version of the tale of Percival and the Fisher King. Sam Flynn is Percival, Kevin Flynn is the Wounded King, and Quorra is the Holy Grail.

Reading it this way would explain why I spent the whole movie thinking about Joseph Campbell's Creative Mythology and Robert Bly's book Iron John.

It also makes it easier, I suppose, to forgive the movie for dealing in stereotypes about the wounded male psyche and for presenting the only real female character as a kind of holy anima figure instead of a real woman with a distinct personality of her own. Easier for guys nursing their own wounded psyches, at least.

(Damn! There's that snark again. But in some ways I count myself among the wounded male psyches in the world, so it's not meant to sound as bad as it might. Remember: nobody gets out of here alive.)
